Emerging Patterns

Portrait Drawing with Standing Female

Several versions of this artwork have been made.  A standing female model was drawn with numerous patterns emerging and a strong perspective focal point. “Emerging Patterns” is a meditation upon time, space and my practice in my studio in the springtime. In this composition, my model was a female figure who posed against a wall with a pattern in front of a north-facing window.  Earlier versions of the drawing represented a nude figure.  Frankly, I wanted to add more texture and patterning to the piece; therefore, I invented the patterned clothing on the model.

I drew it by hand with a live model in the studio during several sessions and referred to photography as reference thereafter.

This highly-detailed artwork was developed by layering thousands of thin lines, wiping some away, then adding more layering, etc. Each hair and skin pore is individually drawn.

I used a Wacom digital drawing tablet to create it. Though it's digital, I restrict myself to using a similar process as I would use with pen and paper. Unlike pen and paper drawing, however, the digital process affords the opportunity to draw using hair-thin, rich, black lines and the flexibility to erase and edit as needed. The additive and subtractive process is key to the density of my work as the subject matter grows into itself over a period of time.

One of the pieces of "Emerging Patterns" contains several physical layers of materials......EXPLAIN THIS.

MORE ABOUT “EMERGING PATTERNS”
The imagery of this artwork has been a fashion design.  Check out my friend's designer work below!

Conceptually, this work relies on the evolution of the image through my mark-making process. Because I draw and paint primarily from observation, my work is the accumulation of thousands of moments of looking with layers of multiple visual insight.

After printing the hand-drawn imagery, I painted highlighted elements in between the layers to add depth and create moments of spontaneity.

All the artworks in my studio deal with the physical, psychological and/or perceived depth of the subject.

My toolbox was enormous for this project. I used materials that ranged from razor blades, resin, glue, foam, plexiglass, zbrush, and photoshop to little glass beads found in my daughters' bedrooms.

The many details

Many of the individual images in the composition were digitally-sculpted.  Each have their own personalities.  In fact, many of them were named by my daughters.  For example, Pink Brownie, Laker, Fire Face, Fiona, Blueberry, and Red Right.  See if you can find these in the piece.
