Building Art Like a Builder

Des Moines needs more events like the South of Grand Social

The view across the street

As a studio artist, Brent gets asked to source his inspiration for the things he creates.  The popular response is that "my visual experience is enough to influence my artwork daily."

What he has a passion for is the pursuit of intelligently-informed Art that pushes boundaries.  The Art's aesthetic appeal is not necessarily the #1 objective of the artwork, though the ones most dear accomplish that.

To clarify, consider this.  If you are standing in your living room looking out the window, what do you see?

The answer might be the house across the street and some trees plus a utility pole.  Brent would add the sight-pathway to those objects which includes the square chair, the window frame, the diamond-shaped grating, and the diagonal rain.  Plus, he'd scoot to the right just to position himself in the perspective of the walkway leading up to the neighbor's house.
This is not unlike an architect or builder, like our friend, Nicholas Donlin, at Zenith Design + Build would approach a plan for a custom project.
What you’re seeing in this post is STUDIO V which is one artwork that will be on display on April 13 at The South of Grand Social hosted by Zenith Design + Build.  This drawing is a solid example of the commonality between Brent's Art and a builder’s construction process.

Much the same, Brent begins with a spatial analysis of the environment, then develops the architectural layout before finishing with details.  You can see this best through the lens of his structural line drawings, such is Studio V.

"I intentionally leave strategic evidence of my process through the art development.  That point being to lend a sense of movement to the landscape; and beyond that, to document the evolution through my visual exploration."
“My studio is long and narrow with a north-facing window in Downtown Des Moines, IA. I know every edge, crack and surface like the back of my hand. Studio V is a cityscape made out of a studio. If you see the hotel rooms, what else do you see?”

We hope you'll join us April 13th for a lively evening benefiting Joppa Outreach.  In simplest terms, Joppa helps homeless people survive, find housing & rebuild their lives.  Our event's host, Nicholas Donlin, was recently involved in a transformative project for one Des Moines man, so we're rallying to give more support!

How can you help?

Studio Holland Art will donate 10% from sales of artwork between Mar 29th and April 20th, 2019 to Joppa Outreach.  Proceeds from tickets sales to Zenith's event are also directly benefiting the organization.  Master Chef David Baruthio of Baru 66 in Windsor Heights will undoubtedly excite our palette with a complimentary sampling of his Mediterranean cuisine from newly-opened Bistro Nomad.

Alexis Johnson and Maria Torres from Iowa Realty are hosting an open house Sunday, March 31st.  Address is 3200 John Lynde Rd., Des Moines, IA 50312.  Installation of the artwork has begun, so preview the collection below, and scope it out on Sunday.  See the listing here.

Just like you, I love architecture too. There's a different degree that I like when it comes to art. When I was a kids, I love e designing and even dreamed to be an architect someday. Well, it may have not happened, but my passion for desiring still remains the same! I have this feeling that it will be a great honor to work with people behind Zenith Design + Build. I am pretty sure that you will be working with different professionals there and eventually learn from them. It sounds great isn't it?
