Want distinct and original art...content?
You've found it! This is the place to gain insight into my artistic vision, and you’ll also benefit from the art business content that my wife, Erica, shares.

Have you ever wondered how some artists seem to be propelled towards success as if a wand was waved over their painting palette - while others just never quite seem to make it?  I have.  I’ve put myself in both extreme camps at one time or another.  In reality, I know I fall in the hard-working class of artistic people who get ahead by creating boundary-pushing art with integrity.  It can be a healthy yet painstaking place to reside, most of the time.  You can learn more about me as an artist today - right here.

Are you curious how an artist approaches a work of art?  Well, it's different for many of us, but I'll try to share with you as honestly as I can the considerations I give before, during and after I create.  If you can't wait, you can start with Splatter - HOW IT'S MADE.

Whether you're an artist, lawyer, foreman, or restaurateur, chances are you work yourself to death most days.  I DO.  Sometimes I feel like I can't finish the project I want to do because there's a list of things I'm obligated to complete first.

School Fundraising Project

Introducing a baking, art and science experiment that created memories and squeals, “Flubber” is brought to you by the curious hands of elementary students!   We made this souvenir for a PTA Fundraiser.  If you have any kids, you’ve probably learned by now that Slime is squishy and fun to touch. Enjoy the recipe to make at home.  Note: We bought all the ingredients at The Dollar Tree, including the bowl.

Have a good time with this project!

Find a peaceful vista from your window.
Studio Plants is a meditation upon time, space and my existence.  I love to watch and study, which is why I have intentionally pivoted away from making artwork that deals with current political and social trends. I choose to focus on the process and psychology of observation and creation. If you'd like to get to know my philosophy, browse this recent interview with The Iowa Arts Council and my artist's statement.

Percentage of art sales benefit students

Updated 7/18/18
Since my last post about this, I wanted to share an update that my studio was able to donate 2% of sales proceeds in 2016 to benefit The Des Moines Art Center School Tours Fund. #ArtTransforms #IowaSTEAM #desmoinesartcenter #Iowapublicschools #IowaArtistFellow2016

Looking ahead, I will continue to donate at least a percentage of year-end profit from all sales to arts education for K-12 students.  I'd love to learn more about your favorite arts education organization.  Please share your experiences and recommendations with me in the comments.

Artist Statement NEW WORKS EXHIBITION

10/8/2016

Brent Holland, Artist
Using representation and abstraction, my paintings and drawings are multilayered meditations upon time, space and my sphere of existence.

Work A) I combine digital drawings, each printed on a separate sheet of clear plastic that when stacked together create a single 2.5-dimensional image. Under the surface, I layer thousands of lines and shapes.  I draw lines by hand to add moments of spontaneity.  All of this translates the complex spatial relationships between people, places and things familiar to me.

Des Moines Artist, Brent Holland, has produced two new bodies of work on display at Olson-Larsen Galleries opening Friday, October 7th.

His work embraces innovative techniques of painting and drawing fit for the digital era.  While steeped in traditional drawing and formal abstraction, Holland chooses a new method that oftentimes eschews the brush and pen in favor of innovative tools and techniques.  His unconventional methods nod to forerunners in “Experimental”, Giacometti, Gillespie, Klein, Pollack, de Kooning- artists from last century.
